THE WEEK THAT WAS…
The Harrisburg City Islanders (10-3-5, 35 points) clinched a USL Second Division playoff berth with a pair of dominant wins last week, downing the Long Island Rough Riders 5-2 on Wednesday, July 27, at Skyline Sports Complex, and setting a team scoring record in a 7-0 throttling of the Northern Virginia Royals on Saturday in Woodbridge, Va.
Sumed Ibrahim registered the first hat trick in team history on Wednesday, scoring three goals in a 27-minute span in the first half. Shane Crawford and Matt Tanzini also found the net against the Rough Riders, and Steve Fisher recorded two assists. Dave Kern was in goal for the win. Derrick Etienne scored twice for Long Island.
Harrisburg set a club record for goals scored in Saturday’s pounding of the Royals. Chad Severs scored six points (2g, 2a) and Steve Fisher added a pair of goals. The City Islanders outshot Northern Virginia 12-2, and Kern did not have to make a save in goal for the win.
The victory secured Harrisburg’s spot in the postseason.

Harrisburg has squared off with the expansion Kings three times already in 2005. In both teams’ season opener on April 16 in Cincinnati, the clubs played to a scoreless draw. On June 4, Severs and Bernie Showers scored to lead the City Islanders to a 2-1 win over the Kings at Skyline. And Showers and Sumed Ibrahim found the net in a 2-2 deadlock between the clubs on June 24 in Cincinnati.
The City Islanders will wrap up their regular season on Saturday, August 13, at Skyline against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (7:05 p.m.). The club’s premier exhibition match against Major League Soccer’s D.C. United is slated for Tuesday, August 16 (7:30 p.m. at Skyline).
Harrisburg will kick off their two-leg, aggregate score Semifinal Series against Charlotte, Western Mass, or Wilmington later that week. The 2005 USL Second Division Championship Game will be played on Saturday, August 27, at 8:00 p.m., and broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel.
ODDS AND ENDS…
- Thanks to a six-point night in Northern Virginia on Saturday, rookie forward Chad Severs enters the week tied for second in the league with 26 points, four points behind Charlotte’s Jacob Coggins. Severs is also tied for second in the league with 11 goals.
- Sumed Ibrahim also enjoyed a banner week. The 24-year-old midfielder scored four goals in two games, including the first hat trick in team history last Wednesday. Sumed ranks sixth in the league with 21 points and is tied for fifth with nine goals.
- Midfielder Steve Fisher has quietly put together a fine sophomore year. The Hershey native scored two goals and six points last week, giving him five notches and 13 points in only 772 minutes this season. Fisher is tied for 12th in the USL-2 in scoring.
- Rookie defender Dustin Bixler is tied for fifth in the league with 1,530 minutes played.
- Defender J.T. Dorsey’s team record streak of 27 consecutive starts came to an end last Wednesday when knee problems kept him out of the match. Dorsey also sat out Saturday’s contest.
- Goalkeeper Dave Kern remains undefeated (8-0-1) on the season. He ranks third in the league in wins, is tied for third with three shutouts (along with teammate Bryan Hill), and is fifth in the league with a 1.19 goals against average.
- Rookie Jimmy Stone (goal) and midfielder Matt Crist (assist) both recorded their first professional points on Saturday.
THE PLAYOFF PICTURE…
The 2005 USL Second Division playoff field was decided over the weekend, with Harrisburg joining Charlotte, Wilmington, and Western Mass in preparing for the postseason. But the end of the regular season still holds plenty of importance for these clubs.
The Semifinals will feature the #1 seed against the #4 seed and #2 against #3 in a two-leg, aggregate score series. The higher seed has the benefit of selecting whether to host the first or second leg of the series, AND when that game will be played.
Western Mass wraps up their season with home games against New Hampshire (this Sunday) and Long Island (Wednesday, August 10). The Eagles and Hammerheads both host Pittsburgh this weekend (Wilmington on Friday, Charlotte on Saturday) before meeting in a potentially crucial finale in Wilmington on August 13. Harrisburg, meanwhile, hosts Cincinnati (this Saturday) and Pittsburgh (August 13) to end their campaign.
