2009 City Islanders Match Reports
8/22 Islanders Season Ends In Richmond
The Harrisburg City Islanders season has come to an abrupt halt tonight at the University of Richmond in an overtime loss to the Richmond Kickers. Surviving the USL-2 Playoffs on their home field, the Kickers netted the only goal of the match in the 120th minute of play. The 2009 USL-2 leading goal scorer, Matt Delicate found the back of the net after a long series of efforts to clear the ball by the Islanders.
The match was a battle from the beginning. Although the end result and the stats defined Richmond as the winner, the Islanders effort was strong throughout the entire match. Chase Harrison recorded an unbelievable 15 saves (10 in regulation, 5 in overtime). Clearly without Harrison strength in the box, the outcome surely would have been different. The Kickers had the share of corner kicks and set pieces and kept attacking the Islanders. Eventually the corner kick in the 120th minute was the play that the Kickers converted into a goal.
The Islanders 2009 season began with a group of fresh faces. In the beginning of the season the Islanders came out with a rush but towards the end of the season the Isles struggled to score. However, tonight during the 120 minutes of play that occurred in Richmond, the Islanders showed what type of fight and he determination they had. A great effort was clearly demonstrated on the field tonight despite the score.
In other play, the Charlotte Eagles upset the number one seed, the Wilmington Hammerheads 1-0. The Eagles will meet the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, August 29, 2009 in Richmond. Fox Soccer Channel will televise the Championship match.
8/7 Stalemate for Islanders, lock up #3 playoff seed
In their last regular season home match of the season, the Harrisburg City Islanders (9-6-4, 31 points) tied Crystal Palace Baltimore 0-0 in front of 2,251 fans at Skyline Sports Complex. With the draw, the City Islanders are locked in as the #3 seed in the 2009 USL Second Division playoffs, with a road game against either Wilmington or Richmond on Saturday, Aug. 22.
Despite opportunities for each squad, neither team was able to capitalize what was a very physical first half. Harrisburg struggled to organize defensively in the first 20 minutes and several legitimate Baltimore opportunities resulted.
In the 14th minute, Baltimore launched into a dangerous series of opportunities, which culminated with a Palace corner. The ball was cleared, but played right back into a wide open Pat Healey on the right side of the field, Healey’s attempt was snatched up by Islander keeper Chase Harrison (three saves). Then in the 17th minute Harrison made a diving save after Paul Robson ripped the ball to the right corner.
By the 20th minute the Islanders looked more organized defensively. A shot by Harrisburg’s Jason Pelletier went just wide of the goal in the 25th minute. That opportunity was followed by another courtesy of Tiyi Shipalane in 26th minute after he received ball just inside midfield and dribbled past former Islander Ryan Pierce before being stripped around the 6 yard box. Despite efforts on each side, the game remained scoreless at halftime, and it would the rest of the evening.
In the second half Harrisburg earned the several opportunities but were unable to earn a goal to decide the match. Tiyi Shipalane danced around defenders to rip a shot in the 50th minute that went just wide.
Crystal Palace’s best opportunity of the second half, and perhaps the evening, came in the 69th minute when a driven cross by second half substitution Machel Millwood slipped past Harrison and was then shot by Robson. Harrison reached behind himself to make the save and keep the game scoreless.
Both teams continued to pressure and look for the goals they desperately needed to earn a win. In the 85th minute, Shipalane played the ball from around Baltimore’s left corner to Jason Pelletier at the top of the box. Pelletier laid the ball off to substitution Nate Baker who bent the ball with the outside of his left food just wide of the net.
Regardless of the result in their last regular season match on Wednesday, at the Western Mass Pioneers, the Islanders have secured the number three spot in the playoffs. They will play at the number two seed, which will be either Wilmington or Richmond, on Saturday, August 22nd.
7/29 Islanders Extinguished 1-0 by Kickers
In a wet and muggy evening at Skyline Sports Complex, the Harrisburg City Islanders (9-6-2, 29 points) fell 1-0 to the Richmond Kickers (9-3-5, 32), their second home loss in a week. As a result of the defeat, the Islanders fall to third place overall in the USL Second Division standings.
The weather for the evening varied between light and heavy rain, and, in the slippery weather conditions, Harrisburg was successful possessing the ball in the back third of the field. However, they were unable to capitalize offensively. A free kick taken by Tiyi Shipalane in the 29th minute from 20 yards out curved toward the upper ninety before Richmond keeper Ronnie Pasquale (4 saves) snared it.
Harrisburg built possession out of the back to earn another dangerous opportunity in the 39th minute when defender Geoff Bloes played a ball from the middle third of field to forward Steve Fisher. Fisher flicked the ball towards the net but his attempt was saved by Pasquale.
The first and only goal of the match came in the 41st minute when Islander defender Dustin Bixler committed a foul near Harrisburg’s corner (and then handed a yellow card for dissent). Richmond defender Sascha Gorres stepped up to take the kick for Richmond and slipped the ball diagonally to the top of the goal box. The Kickers’ Ben Hunter took a one-time shot that slid past Islander keeper Chase Harrison (4 saves) and into the top left netting. At halftime the score remained 1-0 in Richmond’s favor.
In the 56th minute, an Islander free kick was played through traffic in the box and Islander Mo Oduor was able to get a head on it. The ball went soaring toward the upper left corner before being punched away by Richmond keeper Pasquale.
Despite earning the majority of offensive opportunities in the second half, and out shooting their opponents 8-5 overall, Harrisburg was unable to earn a goal on the evening and the score and the end of 90 minutes was 1-0 Richmond. Harrisburg’s next match is Sunday, August 2nd at Crystal Palace Maryland. Their final regular season home match is scheduled for Friday, August 7th.
7/25 Harrisburg Falls 2-1 To Wilmington
The Harrisburg City Islanders (9-5-2, 29 points) were defeated by the
Wilmington Hammerheads (10-4-2, 32 points) on Saturday, July 25th.
The loss, which came in front of 1,838 fans at Skyline Sports
Complex, is the Islanders’ first home loss of the season. With the
loss, Harrisburg falls to second in the USL-2 standings.
Both teams were unable to score in the first 45 minutes of play. A
particularly dangerous Wilmington opportunity came in the 20th minute
when a free kick taken by the Hammerheads’ Chris Murray was punched
away by Islander keeper Chase Harrison (2 saves). Possession in the
first half was evenly distributed between the two teams, although
Harrisburg struggled to fall into an offensive rhythm.
The Islanders stuck first in the second half, when Steve Fisher
received the ball on the left side of the field, beat his defender
and crossed the ball to find Mo Oduor at the top of the 18 yard box.
Oduor took a touch and ripped a shot that was punched away by
Wilmington’s keeper Chris McClellan (6 saves). Chad Severs pounced
on the rebound to net his ninth goal of the season. The Islanders
only goal of the night came in the 54th minute.
In the 62nd minute, Wilmington was awarded a penalty kick after
Islander defender Anthony Calvano committed a foul in the box.
Islander keeper Chase Harrison was also shown a yellow after the foul
for delay of game. Hammerhead Kenny Bundy stepped up and buried the
shot on in the left in the 63rd minute to tie the score at 1-1.
In the 72nd minute, a Wilmington cross rang off an Islanders
defender and into the net for an own goal that tipped the score 2-1
in Wilmington’s favor. Despite several opportunities, the Islanders
were unable to score the equalizer.
In the 73rd minute Harrisburg’s Tiyi Shipalane drew a foul in the box
which resulted in a penalty kick for the Islanders. Severs stepped up
for the shot which deflected off cross bar and back into the goal
box. Shipalane was able to get to the rebound and take a shot which
was tipped over the cross bar.
The Islanders continued to look for scoring opportunities and
certainly had the better opportunities of the second half. In the
78th minute, Shipalane beat several Wilmington defenders before
taking a shot that went just over the cross bar. In the 87th minute a
shot by Islander Baker skimmed the cross bar. Just one minute later
Shipalane put a free kick just wide.
Notes: Harrisburg’s newest player, Tino Nunez (on loan from Real Salt
Lake) put in his first minutes for the Islanders this evening…The
Islanders’ next match is Wednesday, July 29th at home against the
Richmond Kickers.
7/18 Islanders Slide Past Pittsburgh 1- 0
The Harrisburg City Islanders (9-4-2, 29 points) narrowly defeated the Pittsburgh Riverhounds Saturday at Skyline Sports Complex. The victory came in front of 2,413 fans, the club’s largest home crowd of the season.
Pittsburgh attacked from the opening minutes earning the better possession and better opportunities of the first half. A potentially dangerous Pittsburgh cross in tenth minute flew past Islander keeper Chase Harrison (3 saves) but was cleared away by defender Anthony Calvano. Calvano diffused another potentially dangerous opportunity off a free-kick in the 33rd minute.
The Islanders, who have become accustomed to dominating at home, struggled to settle into a passing rhythm and control the ball in the middle of the field. Their best opportunity of the half came when forward Chad Severs dished the ball to Steve Fisher in the box. Fisher’s shot deflected off the post and the Islanders were unable to capitalize. The game remained scoreless at halftime.
At the start of the second half, the Islanders began to earn more possession. In the 64th minute, Islander veteran Mo Oduor split two Pittsburgh defenders to find Tiyi Shipalane in Pittsburgh’s defensive third. Shipalane attacked the space down the right sideline and slid the ball across the goal box to Severs who tucked it away with a one-time shot. That was Severs’ eight goal of the season.
In the 82nd minute, Islander defender Dustin Bixler misplayed a ball in the air that would have found the back of the net, but Islander keeper Harrison made the save to keep the score 1-0 and earn his sixth shutout of the season. This was Bixler’s first regular season game for the Islanders after missing the last 7 games with broken foot.
The Islanders earned several good chances for the rest of the evening, and were able to control Pittsburgh’s offensive advances. At the end of the match the score remained 1-0 in the Islanders’ favor. The Islanders next match is next Saturday, July 25th at 7:05 pm on City Island against the Wilmington Hammerheads.
7/16 Isles Defeated in World-Class Soccer Match
In the first ever soccer match at Lancaster’s Clipper Stadium, the Harrisburg City Islanders were defeated 3-1 by the English Premier League’s Crystal Palace London. A crowd of 5,099 gathered to watch the exciting world class exhibition match.
Crystal Palace London is currently in the States on a preseason tour. On Tuesday, July 14th, Crystal Palace London defeated their sister squad, Crystal Palace Baltimore, 5-1, in another exciting exhibition. Tonight’s match is Crystal Palace London’s second and final match before heading back across the pond to continue their preseason training.
This evening’s was the Islanders’ first experience against a European squad. For the match, the infield of the baseball field was filled with sod to create a soccer field in a stadium that is most famous for being home to the Lancaster Barnstormers baseball squad.
In the opening minutes of the first half, Islanders’ veterans, Steve Fisher and Mo Odour failed to capitalize on opportunities in the box as both teams looked to settle into a rhythm. In the 7th minute Islander defender Cody Reinberg came off the field with a gash below his eye that required stitches. He was replaced by fellow defender Anthony Calvano.
Crystal Palace’s first goal came in the 34th minute when 20-yearold Freddie Sears maneuvered past his defender to rip a shot that slid past Islanders’ keeper Tomer Chencinski and into the back of the net.
Crystal Palace stuck again three minutes later off a free kick by midfielder Darren Ambrose from 20 yards out. Despite some good combination play, the Islanders’ allowed a third goal in stoppage time when midfielder Neil Danns put away a cross from defender Danny Butterfield. With that last minute goal the Islanders headed into the locker room down 3-0 at halftime.
Both squads made several substitutions at halftime—the Islanders subbed half of their starting lineup to allow almost all players to experience the world class scrimmage. Those fresh legs paid off for the Islanders when three second half substitutions teamed up for a goal. In the 69th minute, Jason Pelletier laid the ball off to Chad Severs who slipped it to Brandon Swartzendruber. Swartzendruber took a shot and put the ball in the back of the net to make the score 3-1.
Both squads continued to look for opportunities and in the 81st minute a Crystal Palace shot went off the cross bar and was then cleared for and Islander’s counterattack. Again in the 81st minute a shot by Chad Severs was deflected and hit off the post before rolling out of bounds.

7/8 Islanders Open Cup Run Ends
Despite a well fought match, the City Islanders lost 2-1 against Major League Soccer's D.C. United in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The loss sends the Islanders out of the single-elimination Cup.
Harrisburg went down 2-0 in the opening minutes of the match. However, by the end of the first the Islanders settled into a rhythm and were on even footing with their MLS opponent.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Islander captain Mo Odour was shown a red card and as a result the Islanders played a man down the rest of the match.
After the card the intensity of the match picked up quickly with the Islanders looking to score. Around the 70th minute Nicki Paterson gave Harrisburg a goal after a shot by Tiyi Shipalane was deflected. A few minutes later a shot by substitute David Schofield hit underside of cross bar. Despite several other good chances, the score remained 2-1 at the end of 90 minutes of play.
The Islanders next match is Saturday, July 11 at Crystal Palace. Their next home game is July 18th against Pittsburgh.
7/3 Islanders Down Baltimore 3-1
The Harrisburg City Islanders (8-3-2, 26 points) scored two last
minute goals to defeat Crystal Palace Baltimore (5-7-3, 18 points)
3-1 on Friday in front of 2,133 fans at Skyline Sports Complex. The
victory keeps the Islanders in first place in the USL Second Division.
In what is a rarity for the Islanders at home, they were unable to
score first. Baltimore scored their first and only goal of the
evening in 11th minute when Machel Millwood assisted Jordan Seabrook.
Baltimore’s goal was the first league goal the Islanders have
surrendered at Skyline since their home opener on April 25th; it was
also the first regular season goal that Islander keeper Chase
Harrison has given up on the Island.
Despite going down 1-0 early, the Islanders had the majority of
possession and tied the game up in the 29th minute the when Jason
Pelletier slipped the ball to Tiyi Shipalane. Shipalane took a touch
and chipped the ball off the cross bar and past Baltimore’s keeper
Brian Rowland. That was the last goal of the half.
At the start of the second half a Baltimore goal in the 52nd minute
was disallowed due to an offside call, and for the next 35 minutes
neither side was able to capitalize. Then, in the last four minutes
a pair of goals from second half substitution Brandon Swartzendruber
gave the Islanders a victory. In the 87th minute Pelletier found
Swartzendruber’s head in the box off of a free kick from just inside
the halfway line. Just four minutes later in stoppage time, another
second half substitute, Phil Buffington laid the ball off to
Swartzendruber who capitalized yet again in the 91st minute.
On Tuesday, July 7 the Islanders take on Major League Soccer’s DC
United in the quarter finals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Their
next regular season match is on Friday, July 10th away at Crystal
Palace Baltimore. The Islanders will also be facing off against
Crystal Palace Baltimore’s sister organization Crystal Palace London
on July 16th in a world class exhibition match to be held at the
Lancaster Barnstormer’s Clipper Magazine Stadium.
6/20 Islanders Shutout Maryland 4-0
The Harrisburg City Islanders (7-2-1, 22 points) shut out the Real Maryland Monarchs (5-5-0, 15 points) 4-0 to remain undefeated at home in the regular season. The game was played in front of 1,213 fans at Harrisburg’s Skyline Sports Complex. Despite heavy rain for much of the day, the weather remained clear and in the mid 70’s for the game. The victory at home secures Harrisburg’s first place position at the top of the USL-Second Division standings.
The Islanders set the tone for the match, yet again, by scoring early. In the fifth minute Tiyi Shipalane received the ball from Jason Pelletier in Maryland’s corner and tiptoed around several Monarchs to the top of the goal box. From the 18 yard line, he ripped a shot that slid past Monarchs keeper, and former Islander, David Kern, and into the side netting.
Despite scoring yet another early goal, Harrisburg continued to attack the Maryland defense, and in the 16th minute Islander Steve Fisher was fouled by Fabien Lewis in Maryland’s box. A penalty kick was awarded to Harrisburg for the foul, and Nicki Paterson buried the shot in the right side of the net to make the score 2-0.
In the 19th minute Pelletier and Shipalane teamed up again after Mo Odour won the ball in the middle of the field and dished the ball to Shipalane. Shipalane carried the ball 40 yards to Maryland’s corner, and crossed it into the box for Pelletier to head in the net. Both team scored in the remaining 26 minutes of the half, and the score remained 3-0 at half time in Harrisburg’s favor.
In the 59th minute Shipalane scored the only goal of the second half when he capitalized on a failed clearance by the monarchs. After winning the ball at midfield, he dribbled 30 yards to go one-on-one with Kern, and bury the ball in the back of the net. It was his fifth goal of the season and second of the evening, and sealed the final 4-0 score.
Notes: Islander Brandon Swartzendruber and Maryland’s Yendry Diaz were both red carded in the 81st minute…With the win, Harrisburg remains undefeated (4-0-0) at home and has outscored their opposition 16-1…Their next game is away on Friday, June, 26th at Charlotte, Saturday, June 27th at Wilmington…Their next home match is July 3rd against Crystal Palace Baltimore…They take on Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution on June 30th in New Britain, CT in the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup.
6/16 Harrisburg to Play New England Revolution
The Harrisburg City Islanders defeated the Western Mass Pioneers in penalty kicks after 120 scoreless minutes on Tuesday night at Skyline Sports Complex, advancing to the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Islanders will play the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer in New Britain, CT, on Tuesday, June 30th.
Neither team was able to score through 90 minutes of regulation play and 30 minutes of overtime, and eventually penalty kicks were needed to decide the winner. In the 10th minute a dangerous Pioneers shot hit off the cross bar to keep both sides even. Despite aggressive play from both sides, Islander Nicki Patterson was the only player to receive a cautionary yellow card in the first half.
The physical pace of the game continued in the second half, and Western Mass’ Mark Nerkowski was shown a yellow in the 50th for a tackle on Steve Fisher. In the second half, the Islanders earned their best chances of the evening from combination play in their offensive third; however they were unable to capitalize. The first of these opportunities came in the 52nd minute when Mo Oduor ripped a shot from the 6th and put it wide. Two minutes later, Oduor laid the ball off to Fisher who put the shot over.
In the last 15 minutes of regulation three players were shown card. Bloes was shown a card in the 76th for a tackle on former Islander Almir Barbosa around midfield. David Tyrie and Federico Molinari were both shown cards in the last five minutes of play.
After going scoreless in regulation time, the game advanced to two15-minute overtime periods where both teams were once again unable to capitalize.
After a scoreless overtime, the matched entered penalty kicks. In the initial round of five kicks, Chad Severs, Paterson and Kai Kasiguran made their shots for Harrisburg, and Nate Baker and Tim Velten’s shots were both saved by Western mass keeper James Thorpe. For the Pioneers Molinari, Adrian DuBois and Jeff Deren scored, while Yan Klukowski and Barbosa missed their shots.
With the score tied at 3-3, the game advanced to a round of “sudden death” penalty kicks. Up first was Harrisburg, who sent second-half substitute Brandon Swartezndruber to take the make-or-break shot. Swartzendruber put his shot in the back of the net to make it 4-3. Pioneers defender David Tyrie then stepped to the spot for the decisive kick—Harrison dove to his left to save the effort and seal Harrisburg’s win.
The Islander’s next match is Saturday, June 20th at home against the Real Maryland Monarchs. Kick off is at 7:05. In the next round of the Open Cup the Islanders will take on Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution in two weeks, at New England’s Willowbrook Park.
6/13 Harrisburg Blanks Bermuda 3-0
The Harrisburg City Islanders (6-2-1, 19 points) maintained their
first place ranking with a 3-0 win against the Bermuda Hogges (3-7-1,
10 points) on Saturday night. A sold out crowd of 2,391 watched as
the City Islanders used three second half goals to remain undefeated
at Skyline Sports Complex in 2009.
The City Islanders dominated the midfield in the first half of play.
Tiyi Shipalane had little trouble slicing through the Hogges defense,
recording three shots in the first 45 minutes.
However, despite taking 10 first half shots, the City Islanders
failed to convert in their offensive third. Chad Severs’ narrowly
missing far post effort in the 9th minute was the City Islanders’
only real scoring threat against Bermuda’s goalkeeper Nigel Burgess.
Harrisburg’s defense held its own, giving up only one shot. The
Hogges best scoring chance came on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute.
However, Omar Shakir’s shot sailed wide of the target.
Two yellow cards on the City Islanders (Harrison 33rd minute, Bloes
36th minute) capped a physical first half that featured 11 fouls.
Harrisburg’s scoring frustrations did not last long in the second
half. In the 52nd minute Steve Fisher collected a pass from Nicki
Paterson and turned on a dime, firing a low shot past a sprawled out
Burgess. Two minutes later Jason Pelletier scored on a long range
shot, assisted by second half substitute David Schofield.
In the 59th minute, Bermuda responded with its best chance of the
game. Damon Ming fired a near post rocket towards the City Islander
goal. However, Chase Harrison proved why he leads the league in wins
with a fully extended diving save.
Despite a flurry of shots from the City Islanders, Burgess kept the
ball out of the back of Bermuda’s net. In the 71st minute, Fisher’s
point blank shot was kick saved away from the Hogges’ goal.
However, Harrisburg’s persistence paid off in the 82nd minute.
Anthony Calvano, a second half substitute, floated the ball across
the mouth of the net. Fisher slammed it home for his second goal of
the game, and third of the season.
In the 85th minute, Harrison assured the shutout, punching Stephen
Astwood’s shot over the crossbar.

6/9 US Open Cup Round One: Match Report
The Harrisburg City Islanders defeated the Reading Rage of the Premier Development League 4-1 in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night at Skyline Sports Complex. Despite a storm earlier in the day, the game was played as scheduled, although the slippery field conditions from the rain were a factor in the fast-paced, physical game.
In what has become a habit for them this year, the Islanders struck in the opening moments when Steve Fisher finished Chad Severs’ cross 43 seconds into the game. The Rage answered with a goal in the 9th minute when Jon Ports followed up on his own shot after City Islander’s keeper Chase Harrison’s deflection.
In what was a very fast-paced, slippery, and above all physical game the first card of the evening was handed out to City Islander Jason Pelletier in the 22nd minute of play for a slide tackle around the halfway mark.
In the 28th minute Reading’s Felix Obilo was shown a card for a hard tackle around midfield. Harrisburg’s Cody Reinberg rounded out the 30th minute with another yellow card for dissent.
A minute later Reading’s Dwayne Smith was given a yellow for a tackle on City Islander Geoff Bloes as Bloes dribbled the ball out of the City Islanders’ backfield. With so many fouls it was hard for either team to get into a rhythm, or manage much possession.
In the 42nd minute, Reinberg carried the ball across the midfield line and played a 30 yard ball across the field to Tiyi Shipalane who took one touch and buried the ball in the back of the net.
The Rage responded with a dangerous attempt in stoppage time, but Harrison’s kick save preserved the City Islanders’ lead, sending them into the locker-room with a 2-1 lead at halftime.
In the opening minutes of the second half, the City Islanders were awarded a free kick after Mo Oduor was fouled at the top of Reading’s 18-yard box. Nicki Paterson capitalized on the direct kick to put Harrisburg ahead 3-1 in the 49th minute.
Physical play continued to dominate the match, and Reading’s Aaron Wheeler was shown the fifth yellow of the game in the 57th minute.
Two minutes later, Harrisburg was awarded a penalty kick after Darren O’Connor was handed a yellow for a foul in the box—Severs put away the ball for the City Islanders to make the score 4-1. That was the last goal of the match, although Nate Baker was shown a yellow in the 68th minute.
At the end of the game, seven players had been handed yellow cards, four for the Rage and three for the City Islanders. There were 27 fouls called in the match—14 against Reading and 13 against Harrisburg, and Harrisburg outshot Reading 6 to 5.
With their win over the Rage, Harrisburg advances to the second round of the Lamar Hunt Open Cup, the game will kick off at 7:05 on Tuesday, June 16th at home against the Western Mass Pioneers.
The City Islanders’ next regular season match is one Saturday, June 13th against Bermuda.
The City Islanders would also like to remind fans of their exciting friendly against London’s Crystal Palace FC which will be held on July 16th at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ Clipper Magazine Stadium. 5/23 City Islanders Cruise to Victory
The Harrisburg City Islanders won their third straight game on Friday night, defeating the Charlotte Eagles 3-0 in front of 1,553 fans at Skyline Sports Complex. Mo Oduor, Chad Severs, and Jason Pelletier all scored for the Islanders, who improve to 4-1-1 (13 points) on the season. Charlotte falls to 1-3-2 (5 points).
The Islanders wasted no time, striking in the opening minute when Steve Fisher slipped a ball across Charlotte’s 18 yard line to find Islander veteran Oduor. After taking a touch inside the goal box, Oduor placed the ball in the back of the net. For the majority of the half the Islanders kept Charlotte on their heels allowing, Charlotte only one shot in the entire half.
In the 43rd minute, the Islanders struck again when Tiyi Shipalane beat his defender and broke down Charlotte’s right sideline. Upon reaching the end line he played the ball back across the box finding Severs, who finished with a first time chip over Eagles’ keeper Kevin Trapp (three saves).
The Egles’ best chance of the evening came in the last minute of the half when the Eagles’ forward Gustavo Bentos went one-on-one with Islander defender Dustin Bixler. The dangerous situation was diffused by Islander keeper Chase Harrison (two saves) allowing the Islanders to enter the locker room with a 2-0 lead at halftime.
In the opening minutes of the second half Oduor was injured on a corner kick. He was replaced by Islander’s rookie Kai Kasiguran. The Islander’s next goal came in the 62nd minute when Fisher laid the ball off to an overlapping Pelletier at the top of the 18 yard box. Pelletier connected with Fisher’s pass with a first time, left footed shot that slid past the Eagles’ keeper and into the far corner. Pelletier’s first goal of the season resulted in the 3-0 final score.

4/25 City Islanders Prevail 3-1 in Home Opener
The Harrisburg City Islanders earned a decisive 3-1 win over the Western Mass Pioneers in their 2009 home opener on Saturday night in front of 2,133 fans at Skyline Sports Complex. Chad Severs scored twice for Harrisburg (now 1-0-1) and rookie Brandon Swartzendruber added the team’s third goal. Chase Harrison recorded the win in goal.
The City Islanders set the tone early, attacking with purpose and
structure from the opening whistle. The attacking mentality led to a
perfectly executed set piece in the fifth minute. Nicki Paterson
sliced a ball from the left wing towards the near post, where a
diving
Severs got just enough of it to direct it past losing keeper Matt
Jones (six saves).
Though Harrisburg controlled most of the rest of the half, the score
remained unchanged at intermission. Paterson hit the crossbar in the
12th minute, a Mo Oduor header found its way straight into Jones’
arms
in the 25th minute, and Jones stretched to parry aside a David
Schofield rip in the 43rd minute. Both of Harrison’s saves came in
the
first half, neither on particularly threatening chances.
Harrisburg doubled their advantage at the 49-minute mark. Halftime
substitute Tiyi Shipalane caught Jones off guard with an ambitious
chip from the left wing, and the ball beat Jones and rang off the
left
post. Severs was on the spot to ease the rebound home for a 2-0 edge.
Control of the match remained with the City Islanders over the next
half hour, but the Pioneers turned aside their advances and kept
themselves in the game. In the 76th minute, they cut the deficit in
half when Ben Clark’s corner floated to the far post and found
towering striker Neil Krause, who nodded it home to make it 2-1.
Just three minutes later, though, Harrisburg sealed the win.
Shipalane
broke loose along the right side of the penalty area and found
Swartzendruber in the slot. Swartzendruber sent a low drive through a
crowd and past Jones for the final 3-1 score.
