2010 City Islanders News

End of Season Luau - August 15th- CANCELED

Riverhounds, Islanders Play to 1-1 Draw

Stoppage time goal from Geoff Bloes leads to stalemate

(Harrisburg, PA, August 14, 2010)-The Harrisburg City Islanders tied their last match of the 2010 season 1-1 against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in front of a season-high sellout crowd of 2,389 at Skyline Sports Complex on Saturday. The lone goal for Pittsburgh came in the 11th minute as Adam Gazda put the Riverhounds up after a cross from Matt Baker. The Islanders found success in stoppage time in the second half with Geoff Bloes getting the equalizer-assisted by Dominic Oppong. Tomer Chencinski tallied five saves in the match, including a diving save in the final minute of play denying the Riverhounds the win.

The Riverhounds flexed their offensive muscle as Lee Koaudio-Tobey rocketed a shot that was denied by Chencinski. Then in the 11th minute Baker arched a beautiful pass into Isles' territory where Gazda ripped a volley into the back of the left net to get the 1-0 lead, sending Chencinski diving in the process. The Islanders tried to capture some offensive momentum with Jason Hotchkin tallying a shot in the 16th minute play, only to be denied by Riverhounds keeper Jason Stenta-five in the match.  Again Hotchkin tried to find the back of the net in the 24th minute but couldn't get a result.

The second half opened with a rocket from Geoff Bloes. The Islanders pushed down into the Riverhounds box before Bloes found a perfect opportunity, but his shot banked wide. Bloes again tried to capitalize after he settled a slight pass from Kai Kasiguran but his shot sliced over the crossbar. In the 64th minute the Isles tried to gain some control as a corner kick created confusion in the Pittsburgh box; a following corner also looked promising but the Riverhounds cleared both times. Jason Pelletier found an attempt in the 82nd minute but his shot deflected wide and to the left, leaving the Isles scoreless.

Yet the Isles weren't done and out, even in stoppage time, as a final offensive push by Harrisburg finally resulted in success. Bloes notched his goal, burying the ball into the net after a well-placed pass curved in front of the box by Oppong. With the game tied at 1-1, the Isles used some solid defense in the final minutes to preserve the draw.

Both teams battled to the end of the match, with Pittsburgh notching 10 total fouls and Harrisburg with 11. This result marks the fourth consecutive 1-1 tie in the Pittsburgh-Harrisburg series during the 2010 season.

This match concludes the 2010 Harrisburg City Islanders season. To find more information call 717-441-GOAL or check out the official City Islander website at www.cityislanders.com.

Kickers Defeat Isles 1-0

Richmond Kickers rely on lone goal in first minute of the match to get the win

(Harrisburg, PA, August 7, 2010)-The Harrisburg City Islanders fell to the Richmond Kickers 1-0 at Skyline Sports Complex Saturday night. A goal in the first minute by Matthew Delicate provided Richmond with the lead and the Kickers fought off pressure by the Islanders to gain the victory. Tomer Chencinski tallied four saves in the match.

The first half opened with instantaneous pressure by Richmond. In the first minute an attack led by Kickers star Matthew Delicate tore down the field into Islander's territory. Delicate settled the ball and ripped it past an unprepared Harrisburg defense to gain the 1-0 lead. The Isles tried to counter but couldn't seem to find any offensive rhythm and didn't get a shot off in the first half. For the Kickers, Delicate proved to be a force; in the 18th minute he took off into the Islanders' box and rocketed a shot before a diving save by Harrisburg goalkeeper Chencinski denied the attempt. Delicate added shots in the 22nd and 36th minutes but both tries banked wide.

The second half brought more pressure by Harrisburg. In the 56th minute Jason Hotchkin attacked down the middle and blistered a shot that Ronnie Pascale deflected before Kai Kasiguran launched the ball just over the crossbar. Kasiguran once again got a foot on the ball in the 67th minute and crossed a perfect pass that arched into the Richmond box where Mpho Moloi barely missed the net. One of the best opportunities for the Isles to equalize came in the 74th minute with a launched set-piece by Hotchkin that saw Jerritt Thayer settle and shoot just past the net. Luke Vercollone attempted to create a bigger lead in the 75th minute for Richmond but his shot ricocheted off the bar and out of bounds.

Then tensions began to rise. Both teams played aggressively until the final whistle and heated confrontations resulted in a yellow card on Sheanon Williams and Stephen Nserko in stoppage time.

The next home game for the Isles - their 2010 season finale - is against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday, August 15, at Skyline Sports Complex. To purchase tickets and find more information call 717-441-GOAL or check out the official City Islander website at www.cityislanders.com.

Harrisburg Hosts Richmond at Skyline this Saturday

With only two home games left in the 2010 Islanders season, Harrisburg seeks to go out with a bang.

Saturday, August 7, the Harrisburg City Islanders (4-8-6, 18 points) host the Richmond Kickers (8-5-5, 29 points) at Skyline Sports Complex. The Isles and Kickers met this past weekend on July 31 where Richmond captured the victory with a 2-0 win and sealed a playoff spot. Harrisburg travelled to Pittsburgh yesterday and fought back to equalize the match in the 87th minute with a goal by Kai Kasiguran to gain the 1-1 draw. However, the Islanders did not receive a playoff berth this season.

If Harrisburg wants to revenge the recent loss to the Kickers they will most likely neePittsd to strengthen a struggling offense. The Isles only put up four shots on goal against Richmond and look to gain more opportunities up front. The Kickers went up early with a Edson Elock goal in the 11th minute to kick-start their offense, but solid Islanders defense denied any other attempt to push the lead. However, in the 50th minute Matthew Delicate chipped a shot past Islanders goalkeeper Danny Cepero to go up 2-0 and finalize the win.

The Islanders have proven they don't give up easily, as shown in the Pittsburgh match last night, August 4. Although the Riverhounds continued to gain momentum in Islanders' territory Harrisburg's Tomer Chencinski anchored the defense and helped keep the score 1-0. Nearing the end of the game a perfect  back-pass by Vince Petrasso put the ball in the penalty area where teammate Kai Kasiguran crushed it into the net tying the game 1-1.

The match is Saturday, August 7, at Skyline Sports Complex and begins at 7:00pm. There is a Harrisburg Senators baseball game at Metro Bank Park; parking on the Island will be limited and the Senators do charge a small parking fee. To purchase tickets and find more information call 717-441-GOAL or check out the official City Islanders website at www.cityislanders.com.

Islanders, Union Play to 1-1 Draw

(Harrisburg, PA, July 27, 2010)- Despite numerous opportunities on both sides of the ball, the Harrisburg City Islanders and their official MLS affiliate Philadelphia Union concluded in a 1-1 draw at Skyline Sports Complex Tuesday night. A total of 1,933 fans watched as the first friendly match between the two squads commenced. Danny Mwanga notched a goal in the 30th minute and an own goal by Philadelphia in the 31st minute equalized the score for the draw. Islanders goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski solidified the Isles' defense with four total saves.

The first half began with powerful offensive play by Harrisburg, as the Isles continued to pressure the Union defense. In the 6th minute Kai Kasiguran found a crossed ball by David Schofield and almost headed the ball for a goal but it went just wide. Likewise, in the 9th minute Schofield again launched a perfect cross into the box where Jason Pelletier headed it barely over the crossbar. Then Philadelphia Union took control. A rocket by Nick Zimmerman sent Chencinski diving in an acrobatic save. Chencinski was forced to continue tough saves as the Union upped their pressure with 10 total shots on goal. In the 30th minute Philadelphia capitalized on a beautiful cross by Fred as Mwanga settled the ball and ripped it past Chencinski for a 1-0 Union lead.

Yet seconds later in the 31st minute after Jason Hotchkin crossed a ball, total confusion in the Union box resulted in an own goal to equalize the score at 1-1 before the half's end.

The second half continued with pressure by both sides. In the 48th minute Kyle Nakazawa crushed a shot but was denied by another diving save by Chencinski. J.T. Noone tallied a shot for his USL Second Division Isles for the first half before taking the field for Philadelphia in the 61st minute. The best opportunity in the second half for the Isles came in stoppage time as Vince Petrasso rocketed a shot inside the Union box but a quick save by Brad Knighton cemented the 1-1 draw.

The next home game for the Isles is against the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, August 7, at Skyline Sports Complex. To purchase tickets and find more information call 717-441-GOAL or check out the official City Islander website at www.cityislanders.com.

Battery Tops City Islanders 3-2

(Harrisburg, PA, July 24, 2010)-The Harrisburg City Islanders fell to the Charleston Battery 3-2 at Skyline Sports Complex in front of 1,578 attendees Saturday night. Early goals by Lamar Neagle and Rudolph Maynard gave the Battery a 2-0 lead before Jerritt Thayer notched two header goals to equalize the score; a late goal by Tom Heinemann pushed the Battery up 3-2 and secured the win.

The first half only saw three total shots-one for Harrisburg and two for Charleston. The Battery got on the scoreboard early in the 6th minute with a goal by Neagle. Confusion in Harrisburg's box helped Mike Zaher's pass to slip in front of the net where Neagle punched it in giving Charleston a 1-0 lead. Moments later in the 19th minute Maynard lofted a pass over Islanders defense and towards the left post where Heinemann chipped it into the upper net for a 2-0 Battery lead.

Later in the second half the City Islanders seemed to find some offensive momentum. In the 52nd minute a Harrisburg corner kick launched into the box. Thayer found the ball passed by Tyler Ruthven and headed it to notch a goal and get the Isles back in the game. Moments later another corner kick proved to be successful as Jason Pelletier curved a powerful kick into the box where Thayer again got a head on it, sending it into the left side of the net in the 63rd minute and tying the game 2-2. Yet Charleston capitalized at the right time to push past the Isles. Since converting their first two shots of the game into goals, the Battery suffered from various miscues and a potent Islanders defense until late in the game. Neagle arched a pass up towards the box where Heinemann settled it and launched a shot past a diving Danny Cepero and into the net for the 3-2 Charleston lead. After that, the Battery never looked back as they cemented the win. Both Cepero and Charleston goalkeeper Kyle Reynish tallied two saves in a match that only had each team shooting eight times on goal.

The next game at Skyline Sports Complex for the City Islanders is an exhibition match this upcoming Tuesday, July 27 against MLS affiliate Philadelphia Union. Then, for USL-Division 2 play, the Islanders host the Richmond Kickers on August 7. To purchase tickets and find more information call 717-441-GOAL or check out the official City Islander website at www.cityislanders.com.

Islanders Travel for USL Play and US Open Cup Quarterfinals

Can the Isles seek their fourth win in a row? Saturday, July 17, the Harrisburg City Islanders (4-6-4, 16 points) travel to face the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (3-4-5, 14 points) at Chartiers Valley High School. Harrisburg continues to climb the rankings and now sits in the number four slot just above the Riverhounds and the Real Maryland Monarchs. Now the Isles have Pittsburgh in sight.

The previous match between the two teams ended in a 1-1 draw at Skyline (June 11) and proved to be a physical battle. Each team tallied 11 fouls. A yellow card was given to Pittsburgh's Matt Tuttle, while Harrisburg received four yellow cards. Travis Mackenzie notched the only goal for the Riverhounds while Philadelphia Union loan player Nick Zimmerman evened the score for the Isles to tie it 1-1. It's no doubt the upcoming game could be just as physical as both teams battle for better positions in the standings.

Harrisburg is coming off a 3-2 victory over the Real Maryland Monarchs this past weekend at Skyline. Goals by Anthony Calvano, Tyler Ruthven, and Jason Hotchkin put the Isles up 3-0 and they hung on to win 3-2 in spite of a late offensive push by Real Maryland. Pittsburgh on the other hand dropped their match against the Charlotte Eagles on Friday, July 2. The Riverhounds won two games before falling to the Eagles 2-1. Adam Gazda got the goal for Pittsburgh in the 90th minute, too late to rally to a tie or a win. The Isles hope to keep their success rolling and hand the Riverhounds their second loss in a row.

Geoff Bloes was named USL Second Division (USL-2) Player of the Week. Bloes lead the streaking Islanders to a two-win week, scoring a goal and two assists in victories over Real Maryland. Harrisburg also had defenders Jeritt Thayer and Anthony Calvano named to the USL-2 Team of the Week.

Then Harrisburg will travel to face DC United of the MLS in the quarterfinals of US Open Cup play on Wednesday, July 21, at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, MD at 7:30pm. Since the Charleston Battery fell to Columbus Crew of MLS 3-0, Harrisburg is the only USL-Division 2 team left in the US Open Cup. This match follows the Islanders heart-pounding win over the New York Red Bulls of MLS 1-0 at Skyline and Harrisburg hopes to take down another MLS team in the quest for a championship. There are $15 discount tickets on sale for advance purchase through D.C. United. A live broadcast on WMSS 91.1 radio and internet (www.wmssfm.com) will help bring the game's action to soccer fans everywhere!

The Islanders are also proud to announce an exhibition game against Major League Soccer affiliate the Philadelphia Union on Tuesday, July 27 at Skyline Sports Complex. All tickets are general admission and only $15. City Islanders Academy pro passes are not valid for this match. City Islanders Defeat Real Maryland, 3-2

(Harrisburg, PA, July 10 2010) - The Harrisburg City Islanders stifled a struggling Real Maryland Monarchs side early in the game at Skyline Sports Complex before surviving a late Monarchs' surge to come away with a 3-2 victory in front of 1,812 fans on Saturday night. Goals by Anthony Calvano, Tyler Ruthven, and Jason Hotchkin put the Isles up 3-0 in the first half and the Isles held off sudden offensive pressure to keep the positive result. Danny Cepero tallied three saves for the Islanders and helped propel Harrisburg to their third win in a row.

It was all Harrisburg in the beginning as the Islanders captured control right away in the 8th minute. Geoff Bloes headed a pass across the net where Calvano settled it and powered a curving shot past Monarchs' goalkeeper Brian Levey into the left corner net giving Harrisburg a 1-0 lead. Soon after in the 17th minute Calvano had another opportunity denied by Levey but Ruthven stepped in to bury the ball into the back of the net for a 2-0 score.

The Monarchs tried to regain ground and keep up with the offensive push by Harrisburg, but continued to suffer from miscues. A short pass by midfielder Ben Hunter resulted in a possession change as Hotchkin stepped up, pushed towards the box, and rocketed a long shot into the left post upper 90 to secure a seemingly untouchable 3-0 lead in the 44th minute.

But Real Maryland wasn't out of the match yet. In the 65th minute Mason Trafford slipped past Islanders defense and chipped a ball past Cepero to pull to a 3-1 score. In stoppage time Noviello countered after a failed Islanders attack and popped a pass up in dangerous territory where teammate Hunter shot towards the right net to get to 3-2. The Monarchs continued to push the Isles' defense but couldn't capitalize and Harrisburg survived to notch the victory.

The next game at Skyline Sports Complex for the City Islanders is Saturday, July 24, against the Charleston Battery (7:05 pm kickoff). The Islanders continue their US Open Cup run as they travel to face D.C. United of MLS in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, July 21, at 7:00 pm.

Islanders Upset Red Bulls of MLS 1-0 in OT

(Harrisburg, PA, June 29, 2010)--- A chaotic offensive push late in the second overtime propelled the Harrisburg City Islanders 1-0 over the New York Red Bulls of MLS in a dramatic win in the U.S. Open Cup third-round match at Skyline Sports Complex on Tuesday night.

A season-high crowd of 1,868 saw the result that advances the Islanders to the quarterfinals against tomorrow night's winner of the D.C. United/Richmond Kickers game. In the 117th minute, Dominic Oppong captured the ball and ripped a shot into the back of the net, catching Red Bulls goalkeeper Greg Sutton off his line and notching the Islanders a hard-fought win. Danny Cepero had one of his best games of the season for the Islanders, tallying 8 saves and completing a shutout against his former MLS team.

There were doubts the Islanders could keep up with the Red Bulls, who sit atop of the MLS Eastern Conference. But instant pressure by Harrisburg after the starting whistle set the tone for the rest of the first half. In the 5th minute Sheanon Williams lobbed a pass that arched over the Red Bulls defense and into the path of teammate Tyler Ruthven, but Ruthven's shot was denied by Sutton. The Bulls countered with a quick run up the middle, creating chaos in the Harrisburg box before Brian Nielsen tried to capitalize with a rocket in the 9th minute that sent Islanders goalkeeper Danny Cepero diving, deflecting the ball out of bounds.

And New York kept pressing. In the 22nd minute Mike Petke dribbled into Harrisburg's box and chipped a shot towards the upper right net, but Cepero provided key defense with an acrobatic dive, sending the ball spinning away from the goal. Brian Nielsen sent two shots dangerously close to the net in the 26th and the 36th minute, but each was once again denied by Cepero's solid goaltending.

The second half opened with an ignited Islanders offense hungry for a result. Sheanon Williams tried to capitalize on opportunities, but launched the ball right into Sutton's hands in the 68th minute. Bloes added another shot in the 76th minute yet just missed the target. In what seemed like an unending battle for possession, sharp passing and crisp footwork proved to be critical in controlling the ball.

Then, after regulation time ended, in the 112th minute Vince Petrasso sent a shot sailing towards the inside net but just clipped the crossbar and spun out of bounds.

In the 117th minute the Islanders built an offensive surge with Kai Kasiguran and Bloes that culminated with a dangerously ricocheted ball inside the Red Bulls box, sending Sutton diving to notch two desperate saves before Oppong took control and gained Harrisburg their 1-0 victory over the Red Bulls.

The win sends the Islanders into the quarterfinals for a road match against either DC United of MLS or USL-Division 2 foe the Richmond Kickers.

Harrisburg returns to USL-2 regular season play this Saturday, July 3, against the Charlotte Eagles. Kickoff at Skyline will be 7:00 p.m.

Islanders To Host MLS New York Red Bulls Next Week

All Tickets $10!

Bring on the New York Red Bulls.

On Tuesday, June 29, the Harrisburg City Islanders will host Major League Soccer club New York Red Bulls in the third-round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. This is the first meeting between the two squads in U.S. Open Cup play. Kick-off is at 7pm. All tickets are $10 general admission for youth and adult.

The City Islanders crafted a dramatic come-from-behind victory against first round foe the Brooklyn Italians and fought to a 4-2 result. Geoff Bloes and J.T. Noone led an offensive surge by the Islanders to even the score at 2-2 then helped push Harrisburg into a 3-2 lead. In the second overtime Dominic Oppong added the final goal to cement the win and keep championship hopes alive.

In the second-round Harrisburg relied on a lone goal by Geoff Bloes to hold off the Long Island Rough Riders and take the second-round match 1-0. In the 33rd minute the duo of J.T. Noone and Geoff Bloes once again proved to be the defining playmakers in the Islanders offense. Noone curved a ball past the Rough Riders defense to his teammate and after collecting the pass Bloes sent it flying into the back of the net just inside the post to put the Islanders up. Although the victory wasn't flashy, the Islanders pulled through and can now look to next week's action.

And the Islanders have an MLS team on the radar.

The New York Red Bulls are atop the Easter Conference Standings in Major League Soccer with a 6-2-3 record and look to continue a dominating run throughout MLS competition. In U.S. Open Cup qualifying play the Red Bulls defeated Islanders' MLS affiliate Philadelphia Union 2-1 before blanking the New England Revolution 3-0 and the Colorado Rapids 3-0 to book a trip to Skyline to face Harrisburg.

It's the Red Bulls versus the City Islanders in a match that could define the tournament and push Harrisburg even further towards that coveted championship title.

Will Harrisburg bring down the mighty MLS?

Tickets are on sale now! All tickets are $10 general admission for youth or adult. Children 3 and under are free. Tuesday, June 29 the soccer madness kicks-off at 7:00 pm and gates open at 5:30pm. US Open Cup Play for the Islanders Continues

With a hard-found 4-2 victory over the Brooklyn Italians Tuesday night, the Harrisburg City Islanders continue their run towards the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup championship.

Tension ran high on Skyline Sports Complex as late heroics kept the Islanders in the tournament. The Harrisburg City Islanders relied on a dramatic come-from-behind plan to defeat the Brooklyn Italians 4-2. With the win they claim the first-round 2010 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup match and continue their championship hopes. But it didn't come easy.

A determined Brooklyn Italians squad didn't want to be taken lightly and they showed it. A spectacular lobbed shot from midfield by Marco Hamilton notched the first goal for the Italians and gave them a 1-0 lead before Nate Jafta sent ball into the back of the net for Harrisburg tying the game 1-1. Then Paul Nittoli broke free from the Islanders defense and put the Italians up 2-1 going into the second half, but Harrisburg answered again with a rocket by Geoff Bloes to help even the score 2-2.

Then there was no turning back. In the first overtime J. T. Noone tallied another goal for Harrisburg for a 3-2 lead, then Dominic Oppong put the finishing touch on the Islanders victory scoring to push the result to 4-2.

Harrisburg's next match is against the Long Island Rough Riders. The Rough Riders blanked the New York Pancyprian Freedoms 2-0 in their opening match of the US Open Cup. It'll be Long Island versus the Harrisburg Islanders in the one game separating the teams from facing a Major League Soccer team in the third round, something Harrisburg has done before.

Can they get there again?

Harrisburg and 4 other USL-Division 2 squads eye the prize. The Richmond Kickers narrowly beat Crystal Palace Baltimore 1-0, the Real Maryland Monarchs squeaked by Reading 2-1, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds shut-out Detroit United 2-0, and the Charleston Battery defeated CASL Elite 4-2. The Charlotte Eagles had their championship hopes ended by the Carolina Railhawks in a 1-0 match.

City Islanders Face Richmond Saturday

The Islanders seek to take-down the Kickers this weekend.

The Harrisburg City Islanders (1-5-4, 7 points) host the Richmond Kickers (4-3-3, 15 points) this coming Saturday, June 19 at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island in the second match between the teams this season.

The first meeting between these two squads was in the opening game for the 2010 season at University of Richmond Stadium where a highly competitive match left the game in a 2-2 draw. The Kickers sit just under the Charleston Battery (7-2-3, 24 points) in the standings, but got pummeled 4-1 this past weekend at Charleston's Blackbaud Stadium. The Islanders come off a 1-1 tie against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (1-3-5, 8 points) and continue to climb from the bottom of the standings.

The Islanders hope to change some things this weekend.

After coming off an exhilarating come-from-behind 4-2 victory in US Open Cup play against the Brooklyn Italians Tuesday, Harrisburg hopes to keep the high momentum going into this weekend. Yet Richmond upset Crystal Palace Baltimore 1-0 in their US Open Cup match this week to also give them a boost before facing the Islanders.

Can Harrisburg finally notch that coveted second win?

The City Islanders take the field to face the Richmond Kickers Saturday, June 19 at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. Kick-off is at 7pm. There will be many opportunities to meet soccer players, receive autographs, and enjoy the soccer atmosphere on the Island. Then, Harrisburg hosts the second-round US Open Cup match against the Long Island Rough Riders Tuesday, June 22. City Islanders to Host the Philadelphia Union

It was announced today that the Harrisburg City Islanders will host Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer (MLS) in an exhibition match on Tuesday, July 27 at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island.

The Philadelphia Union is the official MLS Club affiliate to the City Islanders and this will be the first meeting of the teams. The Union began this year as the 16th team in the MLS and in March they became Harrisburg's soccer partner soon after. An annual exhibition in Harrisburg is part of that affiliation.

"Especially in our first season, the more matches we play against quality competition, the quicker we'll improve," said Union manager Peter Nowak. "With two weeks in between our league matches with Toronto and New England, playing the Islanders in addition to Manchester United will give our roster a chance to stay sharp. This match is another benefit of our valuable partnership with Harrisburg."

The Islanders are also looking forward to the event.

"We're very excited to bring a Major League Soccer club to the city of Harrisburg," said City Islanders General Manager Kierstin Rowe. "It provides a huge opportunity for fans to see two great teams compete in what should be a very exciting soccer match."

The match will mark the first time that an MLS club has visited Skyline since Aug. 16, 2005, when a standing-room only crowd witnessed the City Islanders take on D.C. United.

"This is a great opportunity for our players to test themselves against a very high level of competition," said City Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher. "We look forward to an excellent game."

All tickets for the match, both youth and adult, will be $15 general admission and will go on sale tomorrow, Wednesday, June 16, at 11am. Ages 3 and under are free. There are no special offers or group rates. The match kicks-off at 7pm on Tuesday, July 27 and doors open at 5:30pm. It's encouraged to inquire about admission early because tickets are limited. Tickets can be purchased by calling 717-441-GOAL or by visiting the City Islanders official website at www.cityislanders.com.

Completing the tournament are eight Major League Soccer teams that begin their portion of participation starting June 29, during the third round.

Harrisburg made it to the quarter finals during the 2009 Open Cup by winning against the Reading Rage, defeating the Western Mass Pioneers in penalty kicks, and beating the New England Revolution before falling to D.C. United 2-1 in a close and competitive match.

Will the Islanders once again pose a threat and push towards the Dewar Challenge Trophy try to claim the $100,000 prize?

Shipalane Returns for Southern Swing with Islanders

Harrisburg continues to add explosive players to the team lineup.

Both Tiyi Shipalane and Sainey Touray are on loan to the City Islanders and, pending league approval, will be ready to face Charlotte and Charleston this upcoming weekend on the road.

Some may recognize Shipalane from the past season with the City Islanders, where his competitive play and skillful assets helped him notch the 2009 USL-Division 2 Rookie of the Year award. After his stint in Harrisburg, he transferred to D.C. United and then recently signed with the Carolina Railhawks. For at least this weekend, Shipalane is part of the Islanders once again.

Touray is also a valuable addition to the Islanders team. He has participated in the Gambia Premier League, where he led Wallidan with nine goals before concluding his season by trialing with the New York Red Bulls (MLS). He signed with New York, finding success in the process in six matches with the Bulls, before returning to Wallidan in 2009. Touray looks to improve the Islanders offense going into this weekend.

With new additions leading Harrisburg this week, the Islanders hope to capitalize on proven talent to launch back into USL-Second Division standings.

Isles Seek Two Wins on the Road

The Islanders brace for some tough away games.

This weekend marks a road trip for the Harrisburg City Islanders (1-4-2, 5 points) as they travel south to face the Charleston Battery (6-1-2, 20 points) at Blackbaud Stadium and the Charlotte Eagles (3-3-2, 11 points) at Charlotte Christian Stadium on Friday, June 4, and Saturday, June 5.

Harrisburg signed Tyler Ruthven--whose experience includes playing for the Premier Development League's Chicago Fire--hoping to boost defensive play. If his contract is approved by the league in time he'll look to be a solid asset in the coming matches this weekend.

The Islanders lost the first match against Charleston Battery 3-1 at Blackbaud Stadium earlier in the season, but beat the Battery 2-1 at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island to capture their first win and end Charleston's undefeated stretch. Dustin Bixler netted his first-ever goal for Harrisburg in the game, and the Islanders proved they could be a legitimate threat to any team when the right pieces were in place.

Can the Islanders repeat the magic?

"We just need to make sure we come with the same focus and find ways to score goals," said Coach Bill Becher. "We played pretty well but struggled with scoring, we just need to have a little bit better concentration." But overall he has a positive outlook based on what the Islanders have done the past few weeks. "...there is really no real need to change stuff up we just need to execute better on the offensive end."

Charlotte looks to challenge Harrisburg yet again. The Eagles blanked the Islanders 2-0 in their first meeting this season, and then played them to a 0-0 draw this past Saturday on City Island. Islanders Dustin Bixler and Sheanon Williams were both named to the USL-Second Division Team of the Week.

Although there is improvement on all sides of the ball, the Islanders hope they can achieve a better result this coming weekend. The Islanders, in last place in USL-Second Division, seek to climb the standings by taking down first place Charleston and third place Charlotte in critical matches for a team building for more success.

The City Islanders take a road trip and face the Charleston Battery this Friday, June 4 at Blackbaud Stadium and the Charlotte Eagles this Saturday, June 5 at Charlotte Christian Stadium. The next home game for the City Islanders is on Friday, June 11 against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (1-3-3, 6 points) at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. Youth tickets (ages 5-18) only cost $5. City Islanders, Eagles Finish Scoreless

Despite opportunities, Harrisburg and Charlotte play to a 0-0 tie

(Harrisburg, PA, May 29, 2010) - It wasn't a loss, but it wasn't a win.

A 0-0 draw between the Harrisburg City Islanders (1-4-2, 5 points) and the Charlotte Eagles (3-3-2, 11 points) may look better in the standings, but there is no denying the Islanders wish they could have back all the missed opportunities from this game.

Although the game was packed with opportunities for the Islanders, capitalizing on them proved to be problematic. All nine Islander corner kicks either ended in Eagles goalkeeper Erik Lefebvre's hands before any attack could form or rocketed past the box.

In the 16th minute Andrew Hoxie was seemingly taken down in the box but a no-call hindered any possibility of a penalty kick, something that could have greatly shifted momentum towards the Islanders.

Would it have changed the outcome of the game? Maybe. But was it the only opportunity? Not at all. The opportunities kept on coming.

Vince Petrasso blistered a shot in the 21st minute but couldn't find the back of the net. In addition, a beautiful opportunity arrived in the 26th minute but shots inside the box by Islanders Andrew Hoxie and Sheanon Williams were once again blocked by Lefebvre for the Eagles.

The best first-half opportunity for Charlotte came in stoppage time when Debola Ogunseye shot a dangerous ball that forced Islander goalkeeper Danny Cepero to make a diving save; one of his three saves of the game.

The second half continued to be full of miscues for both teams.

In the 52nd minute Petrasso again launched a shot at the bottom right corner but a diving save by Lefebvre denied success. A shot for the Islanders by Williams barely clipped the crossbar. Jason Hotchkin continued to apply pressure but his shots were either off-target or blocked.

The Eagles, winless in their last three matches, only had one corner kick and seemed to struggle offensively overall. Lefebvre's 8 saves played a huge role in thwarting Harrisburg's offensive attack.

The next game at Skyline Sports Complex for the City Islanders is Friday, June 11, against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (1-3-3, 6 points). To purchase tickets and find more information call 717-441-GOAL or check out the official City Islander website at www.cityislanders.com.

Isles Battle Charlotte Eagles this Saturday

Are the Islanders ready to turn the season around?

This upcoming Saturday, May 29 at 7pm the Harrisburg City Islanders (1-4-1, 4 points) will face the Charlotte Eagles (3-3-1, 10 points) at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. The Islanders look to ride the momentum that led them to their first win of the season over Charleston Battery (6-1-1, 16 points) this past weekend and take control of their season. The Islanders came out strong and achieved a 2-1 result that ended Charleston's undefeated streak.

Charlotte looks to notch a win after falling to the Richmond Kickers (3-1-3, 12 points) and playing to a 0-0 draw against the Maryland Monarchs (2-3-3, 9 points) in recent play while Harrisburg seeks to build off their recent success.

But it won't be easy.

The Eagles took the first match between the two teams this season 2-0 at Charlotte Christian Stadium. Debola Ogunseye continually tested the Islander defense throughout the first game and finally capitalized on his attempts by scoring one of the two Eagles' goals. Harrisburg will have to create solid play on defense in order to stop Ogunseye and the Eagles offense and continue to create opportunities to find the back of the net. The Islanders hope home-field advantage and a fresh outlook on the season will help bring the Eagles down.

Will it be enough to cruise to another win?

"It's really simple," said Islander team captain Dustin Bixler, named USL-2nd Division Player-of-the-Week. "We need to keep the momentum that we got. We got the result we were looking for and if we do that again we won't have a problem."

Bixler, who scored his first-ever goal for the Islanders against Charleston this past Saturday, noted the importance of the recent win. He and forward Nick Zimmerman made it on the USL-2nd Division Team of the Week.

"It puts me back in a positive mindset. You need something to boost morale and get everyone going again and I think that happened." Bixler also acknowledged the opposition waiting for the Islanders this weekend. "They're [Charlotte] are always a tough team. They have really dangerous players that we have to watch out for. We have some dangerous players too so hopefully we'll work that out."

Danny Cepero, coming off a career-high 3 saves, looks to anchor an Islander defense that sparks new life.

"With that game it helps the confidence level. We can do this, we've won a game." Cepero said. He also emphasized a positive mindset. "It's that winning attitude that really is contagious. You know you can win and you're capable of doing it if you can perform to your greatest potential." He also took note of Charlotte's ability to be dangerously good. "It's important for us to get on the scoreboard early."

The City Islanders take the field to face the Charleston Battery this Saturday, May 22 at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. Kick-off is at 7pm. In addition to the game, there will be many opportunities to meet soccer players, receive autographs, and enjoy the soccer atmosphere on the Island. Also, the youth tickets (ages 5-18) only cost $5. To purchase tickets and find more information call 717-441-GOAL or check out the official City Islander website at www.cityislanders.com.

Islanders Victorious

The Harrisburg City Islanders defeat first-place Charleston Battery in physical match

(Harrisburg, PA, May 22, 2010) - This is exactly what the Harrisburg City Islanders have been waiting for.

After being haunted with missed opportunities through their first five games, the Islanders (1-4-1, 4 points) notched their first match victory this season with a 2-1 victory over Charleston (6-1-1, 19 points), ending the Battery's undefeated run. Charleston boasted the best record in USL-2nd Division play and an undefeated season when arriving to meet the last-placed City Islanders.

Not anymore.

The winning formula? Aggressive pressure and a goal by a player who holds the Islanders record for most minutes played with over 7,400. Team captain Dustin Bixler tallied his first-ever regular-season or playoff goal using an acrobatic volley to launch a shot into the back of the net with assist by David Schofield.

And it didn't stop there. In the 78th minute Islander Nick Zimmerman followed suit with a rocket from just outside the box assisted by Jason Hotchkin giving the Islanders a 2-0 lead going into the later moments of the second half.

The Battery answered in the 86th minute after a foul in the box by Islander Jason Hotchkin resulted in a penalty kick for Charleston. Kevin Jackson's PK was saved by Danny Cepero but deflected directly back to Jackson who found the net with his second try making the score 2-1.

The last moments proved intense as both teams battled for possession. Yet the Islanders held strong and preserved the first 2010 season victory.

The physical tension ran high as the total number of fouls for the teams combined to a total of 23 by the end, with Charleston's Zach Prince receiving a red card for a slide-tackle from behind in the 46th minute which arguably changed the game dramatically in favor of the Islanders.

Though the second half proved successful, the first half was filled with inconsistencies and missed opportunities. The match started with the City Islanders coming out strong, instantly pressuring the Battery with multiple attempts on goal. However, not capitalizing on those opportunities nearly hurt the Islanders as shots by Charleston's Alioune Gueye and Amaury Nunes failed to find the net. Likewise, the Charleston Battery looked flat without Rudolph Maynard, ousted by a red card against Pittsburgh Friday night, and Mike Zaher who suffered a head injury in that same game.

Giveaways during the game proved problematic. Both teams seemed desperate throughout play resulting in constant possession change that continued to bog down any opportunity for a result. But then the Islanders decided it was time to take control.

The next game at the Skyline Sports Complex for the City Islanders is next Saturday, May 29, against the Charlotte Eagles. To purchase tickets and find more information call 717-441-GOAL or check out the official City Islander website at www.cityislanders.com.

Isles Back at Home Saturday

This Saturday, May 22 at 7pm the Harrisburg City Islanders (0-4-1, 1 point) continue to search for their first win as they host the Charleston Battery (5-0-1, 16 points) in a game that pits the first and last place teams in USL-2 standings against each other.

The Islanders look to bounce back from a shaky start while meeting the Battery for the second time this season. Charleston took the first meeting between these teams this season 3-1 at Blackbaud Stadium with Jason Hotchkin tallying the only goal for the Islanders. Missed opportunities plagued the Islanders with 9 shots on goal proving mostly unsuccessful. While the Islanders attempt to regain footing and notch their first win, Charleston looks primed to challenge and continue their undefeated run.

Both teams come off competitive matches with Charleston squeaking out a 2-1 victory against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (0-2-3) and the Islanders dropping a close contest 3-2 against Real Maryland Monarchs (2-3-2).

The Islanders hope this weekend will turn out differently.

J.T. Noone, a Harrisburg native, signed a short term contract with the City Islanders last week, and makes his home game debut against the Battery. Noone, named All-American at Temple University his senior year, looks to add a dynamic force to the Islander offense. His addition might prove crucial in a game that could possibly be a turning point for the Islanders season.

"Growing up I was going to Islanders games," said J.T. Noone. "It's definitely a good thing to be here." Noone emphasized the importance of the upcoming game. "It's a big weekend for the team. We're focused and hopefully we'll get a result."

Islander Head Coach Bill Becher hopes to capitalize on opportunities this Saturday and come away successful as well.

"We got to get back to basics and get ourselves ready for the game," said Coach Becher. "And we think that if we can buckle down defensively we can come out with the result." He also noted the overall preparation for the weekend. "We're going to have to put in a good week, get the guys focused on the game at hand. It's a long season and we've only played one game at home so we're going to rebound this weekend."

Isles Looking for a Win

The Harrisburg City Islanders will complete their three game road trip Thursday night against the Real Maryland Monarchs. The Islanders were unable to get any points this past weekend down south. Charlotte scored two second half goals to defeat the Islanders 2-0 on Friday, and Charleston scored three restarts in route to a 3-1 win on Saturday. Real Maryland earned a point this past weekend on the road in Richmond with a 1-1 tie.

The Islanders and Monarchs have already met once this season with the Monarchs taking a 2-0 win on City Island. Harrisburg has had success on the road against the Monarchs the past two seasons, winning three times and tying once. There are only 3 points separating the two teams in the standings, so Thursday is a big game for both teams.

Jason Hotchkin scored his first goal as an Islander on Saturday night, and newly signed J.T. Noone added the assist. Midfielders Nate Jafta and Brian Ombiji both sat out on Saturday night against Charleston with injuries.

City Islanders Face Charlotte & Charleston

Harrisburg native J.T. Noone Signs with the Islanders

The Harrisburg City Islanders are traveling south this weekend in search of their first win of the 2010 season. They will play in Charlotte on Friday night against the Eagles, and then in Charleston on Saturday to face the Battery. The Islanders have played pretty well in their opening two games, but have come away with only one point. They opened the season in Richmond with a 2-2 tie, and then fell 2-0 at home to the Real Maryland Monarchs.

Charlotte comes into the game with a record of 1-2, winning at Richmond 1-0, and losing twice to the Battery 3-2, and 2-1. The Eagles have reached the USL-2 Championship game five of the past six years. The Islanders defeated the Eagles at home last year 3-0, and earned a 1-1 tie in Charlotte.

Harrisburg and Charleston will meet for the first time on Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium. The Battery joins USL-2 after competing for many seasons in USL-1. They have won 3, and tied 1 to start the season, with wins against Charlotte (twice), and Real Maryland. They played to a scoreless tie with Pittsburgh in their home opener.

The City Islanders have added J.T. Noone to their roster. Noone, who played high school soccer at Central Dauphin, signed a 21-day contract on Wednesday. J.T. had a stellar career at Temple University, where he was named an All-American his senior year. He has been training with the Philadelphia Union for the past month. "We are excited to add J.T. to our team for the next few weeks" said Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher. "He is a quality player who will be able to step in and help right away."

City Islanders Fall 2-0 in Home Opener

(Harrisburg, PA, April 24, 20100)-The Harrisburg City Islanders fell in their home opener 2-0 to the Real Maryland Monarchs on Saturday night at Skyline Sports Complex. Harrisburg drops to 0-1-1 on the season while Real Maryland improves to 1-0-1. Danny Cepero (one save) took the loss in goal.

The City Islanders controlled play early on, spreading the field and creating two excellent chances in the first 10 minutes. In the fifth minute, a Nate Jafta header into the goalmouth was snared by Levey before Brian Ombiji could get to it. And in the 10th minute, Jason Pelletier nearly curled in a corner that Levey stretched to punch over the bar.

Real Maryland, though, scored the lone goal of the half. In the 17th minute, the ball found its way to midfielder Sean Rush on the right side of the area, and Rush snuck a shot past Cepero at the near post. Harrisburg threatened to tie the match twice – efforts by Ombiji (37th minute) and Geoff Bloes (stoppage time) went wide – but the Monarchs held a 1-0 lead at the half.

The Monarchs continued to stifle the City Islanders for the first 30 minutes of the second half, but Harrisburg nearly broke through several times over the final quarter of an hour. As Harrisburg pushed forward in numbers, Pelletier, Sheanon Williams, and Geoff Bloes all had chances as time wound down – all of them, however, went high or wide or were blocked by a committed Maryland defense.

The visitors sealed the win in stoppage time. Harrisburg’s Vince Petrasso pulled down Monarchs midfielder Ben Hunter in the penalty area, and Hunter buried the ensuing penalty kick for the final 2-0 score.

Notes: The City Islanders are off next weekend and return to action with road games on Friday, May 7 in Charlotte and Saturday, May 8 in Charleston. Their next home game will be Saturday, May 22 against Charleston…Defender and team captain Dustin Bixler received a red card in second half stoppage time.

City Islanders Aim for Strong Start in Home Opener

The Harrisburg City Islanders will unveil their fast, attacking game to the home crowd against the Real Maryland Monarchs on Saturday, April 24th. They may also unveil another explosive addition to the line-up with the recent signing of Vince Petrasso.

An all-conference player at Campbell University in 2009, Petrasso makes things happen in clutch situations. He led the Atlantic Sun Conference and ranked fifth nationally in assists per game with 11 in 18 outings, and five of his 13 career goals have been game winners. Last fall, Petrasso helped lead Campbell to its third A-Sun regular season title in the last 5 years and a 16-1-1 league regular season record over past two years.

“Petrasso is a good attacking outside mid-fielder,” said Islanders Coach Becher. “He’s a great dribbler who will attack guy’s one on one and will add a new element to our game.”

The addition to the already explosive offense and the veteran mid-field and defense could be devastating to opponents. The team is pumped to start strong for the home crowd, especially facing two former teammates. Nicki Paterson and Nate Baker both played for the Islanders last year, but will take the field in a Monarch’s uniform.

Becher stressed the importance of the home team advantage. “There are a lot of good teams and it’s critical to win your home games,” said Becher. In 2009 the Islanders did just that, with a 7-2-1 record at the Skyline Sports Complex, allowing only five goals while scoring 21 over the 10 games.

The team hopes to build on their gritty 2-2 draw against the 2009 USL-2 League champion Richmond Kickers on their home turf, and Becher is looking to the veterans to maintain the team's consistency and composure. “We can’t get too excited about the result in Richmond,” said Becher. The team will also focus on tightening up a bit on defense and continue to attack with a fast-paced game, according to Becher.

The home opener kicks off at Skyline Sports Complex, City Island at 7:00pm. The first 600 fans will receive a free t-shirt courtesy of Capital BlueCross. Bring a marker to get those t-shirts signed by players after the game!

Islanders Show Poise, Resilience in 2-2 Tie on the Road

The Harrisburg City Islanders battled back from an early deficit, and then hung on to tie the 2009 USL-2 League Champion Richmond Kickers 2-2 to bring home points in their season opener.

Islanders Coach Bill Becher started 8 veterans for their experience and one rookie for his explosiveness in addition to two players on loan from the Philadelphia Union—a mix that prevented the team from collapsing on the road after the early deficit and turned the game around quickly.

The Kickers struck first in the 11th minute when forward Matthew Delicate tucked in a cross from the right wing by Brian Burke. The Islanders answered in the 17th minute. Rookie striker Sheanon Williams intercepted a header from Kicker’s defender Henry Kalungi to his goalkeeper, Ronnie Pascale, and Williams collected the rebound off Pascale, redirecting it into the net from 14 yards out.

“That was huge to answer back after 5-6 minutes,” said Becher. “The veterans have been through a lot and their experience showed when they battled back hard after falling behind.”

The Islanders almost scored in a similar fashion in the 33rd minute when Shea Salinas, on loan from the Union, intercepted a Kicker’s defensive pass back to the keeper, but his shot hit the side netting from a tough angle.

Harrisburg took the lead in the 40th minute when Kai Kasiguran headed a pass to Brian Ombiji inside the box. Ombiji collected the pass with composure and touched the ball into the left corner of the net.

The Kickers evened the score with the last tally of the game in the 76th minute when Delicate headed an arching cross from Sascha Gorres over goalkeeper Danny Cepero.

“It’s a good showing for us,” said Coach Becher. “We know we have resilience and fight, and although we wanted the win, we’re happy to go into the defending champion’s stadium and get points.”

The Islanders now shift their focus to the home opener next Saturday against the Real Maryland Monarchs on Saturday, April 24th. “It’s critical to win your home games,” said Becher. In 2009 the Islanders did just that, with a 7-2-1 record at the Skyline Sports Complex, allowing only five goals while scoring 21 over the 10 games.

Keys to the home opening game include keeping composure. “We can’t get too excited about the result in Richmond,” said Becher. The team will also focus on tightening up a bit on defense and continue to attack with a fast-paced game, according to Becher.

“We gave up two similar type goals against Richmond. You can’t give up two goals and expect to win a lot of games,” said Becher. “On the other hand, if we continue to score two goals, we’ll win a lot of games.”

Expect an exciting, fast-paced game this Saturday. Kickoff at Skyline Sports Complex, City Island is 7:00pm. The first 600 fans will receive a free t-shirt courtesy of Capital BlueCross. Bring a marker to get those t-shirts signed by players after the game!

Isles Open Saturday in Richmond

This Saturday the Harrisburg City Islanders return to the University of Richmond Stadium— where their 2009 season ended—to open the USL-2 season against the 2009 USL-2 League Champion Richmond Kickers. This time the Islanders aim to take care of unfinished business.

In 2009 the Islanders logged a 9-7-4 league record and earned the third playoff seed before falling 1-0 to the Kickers in the waning moments of the second, and final, overtime. The rivalry has been growing since Harrisburg took the USL-2 championship from Richmond in 2007. The game will give the Islanders an early test, and they are looking to start strong.

The Islanders will have two Philadelphia Union players on loan for the opener as part of the player development program, defender Toni Stahl and forward Shea Salinas. Islanders Coach Bill Becher, a finalist for 2009 USL-2 Coach of the Year Award, said he expects them to step in and contribute to get a win.

An influx of young players join the seven players returning from the 2009 team, and veteran Dustin Bixler, who has played six seasons with the Islanders, is excited about the team’s development under Coach Becher and Assistant Coach Widdowson. “We have a great group of talented guys who are excited to work as a group.”

Becher feels the team should provide an exciting brand of soccer. “We are very young and it will be a high energy and attacking team.” If the team can score goals, the defense will take care of the rest. Bixler anchors the defense at center back in front of two dominant goalies. “We’ve got two guys at keeper that we have a lot of confidence in,” said Becher.

Becher expects new signings Jeritt Thayer and Sheanon Williams to be on the pitch for Saturday’s opener. Thayer joins the defense and brings experience. He spent time with the New York Red Bulls Reserves prior to playing played 34 games for the now-defunct Wilmington Hammerheads in 2008-09. Williams will take his explosiveness up front. He has played in two youth World Cups for the United States: the U-17 World Cup in Korea (2007) and the U-20 World Cup in Egypt (2009).

Catch the Islanders in action at their HOME OPENER on Saturday April 24th against the Real Maryland Monarchs. Kickoff at Skyline Sports Complex, City Island is 7:00pm. The first 600 fans will receive a free t-shirt courtesy of Capital BlueCross. In addition to fast, exciting soccer, you can meet your favorite players and find lots of autograph opportunities.

2010 Roster Introduced

The Harrisburg City Islanders introduced their current roster and unveiled their 2010 uniforms in a press conference on Thursday morning at the Capital BlueCross Headquarters Building in Harrisburg. Capital BlueCross, a presenting sponsor of the City Islanders, has hosted the event each year of the team's existence.

Players donned the club's 2010 home uniforms, supplied by Nike, the global sports apparel giant and Harrisburg's official uniform supplier. The Capital BlueCross logo is once again featured prominently on the jersey's chest, along with Snickers, another presenting sponsor.

"We thank Capital BlueCross for once again hosting this annual event, which has become synonymous with the start of our season," said City Islanders President Eric D. Pettis. "With the World Cup just around the corner, soccer will be on everyone's minds in the coming months. With a talented City Islanders team and a variety of special events planned, fans can expect a very exciting summer."

"It is no surprise that the Harrisburg City Islanders are entering their seventh season of play," said David Skerpon, Capital BlueCross Vice President of Corporate Communications and Advertising. "A well-run organization like the Islanders is no stranger to longevity. This team epitomizes what we look for in a community partner, and what the community looks for in a professional sports team."

Seven of the 13 players introduced by City Islanders head coach Bill Becher on Thursday played for the club in 2009. Defenders Dustin Bixler (Red Land High School), Geoff Bloes (Middletown High School), and Anthony Calvano, midfielders Jason Pelletier, Kai Kasiguran, and David Schofield, and goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski all return. Bixler, an All-League First Team selection last year, enters the season as the team's all-time leader in starts and minutes played. Schofield, the club's all-time assists leader, is the lone remaining player from Harrisburg's original 2004 squad.

Two familiar faces return to the City Islanders after a year away from the club. Goalkeeper Danny Cepero, who starred for Harrisburg in 2008 while on loan from the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer, steps back between the pipes. Also returning is midfielder Brian Ombiji, a key piece of the team's 2007 Championship run.

The club has high hopes for midfielder Nate Jafta, a playmaking force in the Premier Development League from '06-08. Fellow newcomers Dominic Oppong (midfielder) and Anthony Di Biase (defender) will look to establish themselves in Harrisburg's lineup. So will midfielder Mpho Moloi, a former Houston Dynamo (MLS) draft pick who has most recently played professionally in his native South Africa.

We'll still be shaping this roster over the next week or so, but we feel confident in the team we've started to build," said Becher, a finalist for 2009 USL-2 Coach of the Year Award. "This is a talented group that should be willing to work hard every time out. I think we have skill and versatility, and a good mix of veterans and youth. Every year is a new challenge, and we look forward to it."

The City Islanders wrap up their preseason schedule this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. against Temple University at Ambler Field in Philadelphia. The player development partnership with Philadelphia Union will begin as Union player Toni Stahl and Union trialist and Harrisburg native J.T. Noone (Central Dauphin High School/Temple University) will suit up for the Islanders. Stahl, a rookie from Finland, was ejected from the Union's opening match on March 25th and will use the match to gain playing time while serving a one game suspension. Noone will have the opportunity to impress Union's Coach John Hackwarth who will be there to watch Noone and the City Islanders players.

Harrisburg opens their regular season on Saturday, April 17 on the road against the Richmond Kickers (7:00 p.m.). Harrisburg's home opener will be on Saturday, April 24, against the Real Maryland Monarchs. Kickoff at Skyline Sports Complex will be 7:00 p.m. Season, group, and single game tickets are on sale now. Tickets are available by calling 717-441-GOAL or online at www.cityislanders.com

Exclusive Major League Soccer Affiliate

Harrisburg, PA (March 1, 2010) - The Harrisburg City Islanders announced today an official partnership with Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer, establishing themselves as Union’s exclusive USL Second Division affiliate.

“We’re proud and excited to make this announcement today,” said City Islanders President Eric Pettis. “Before they’ve even played a game, Philadelphia Union have proven themselves to be a truly first-class organization. Both clubs will see numerous benefits, on and off the field, as a result of this partnership. It’s a natural fit.”

An annual friendly match in Harrisburg between the clubs (date to be announced) highlights the partnership. Other components will include cross promotional opportunities and Philadelphia Union player appearances in Harrisburg throughout the summer and off-season.

The City Islanders will also become a key part of Philadelphia’s player development strategy, as Union will have the option to loan players to Harrisburg. Similarly, City Islander players will benefit from exposure to Philadelphia’s staff and training methods.

“Player development is a key component to building the quality club and organization we will be,” explained Nick Sakiewicz, CEO & Operating Partner of Philadelphia Union. “With the Harrisburg City Islanders and our previously announced relationship with Reading United, Philadelphia Union Team Manager Peter Nowak will instill ‘first team’ principles in training and playing attacking, attractive football throughout Pennsylvania that our supporters will truly enjoy. We’re eager to get going."

“We’ve worked with MLS clubs frequently over the years, but to formalize a relationship like this is ideal,” said City Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher. “I think players and staff from both clubs will see real benefits as a result.”

The City Islanders also unveiled their 2010 jerseys at today’s event, held at the Capital BlueCross Headquarters Building in Harrisburg.

The City Islanders will open their 2010 regular season on Saturday, April 17 in Richmond, with their home opener slated for Saturday, April 24 against the Real Maryland Monarchs (Skyline Sports Complex, 7:00pm). The club will kick off a seven-game preseason schedule on Wednesday, March 17 against Saint Francis University.

Isles Sign PDL Standout

The City Islanders are excited to welcome midfielder Nate Jafta to their roster. A native of Pampierstad, South Africa, Jafta comes to the island after playing for Lindsey Wilson College and the Michigan Bucks of the Premier Development League (PDL).

The skilled playmaker starred for the Bucks from 2006 to 2009, playing in 49 games tallying 15 goals and 35 assists. Jafta led the league in assists in 2006 (11) and finishing second in 2007 (10). Jafta was a PDL Top Eleven selection for three straight years from 2006 to 2008 – a notable accomplishment in a 67-team league with over 1,600 players.

The 26-year-old led the Mid-Southern Conference in goals per game (1.05) and assists per game (.57) as a junior at Lindsey Wilson, earning NAIA First Team All-American accolades.

At Lindsey Wilson and with the Bucks, Jafta played with former City Islander Tiyi Shipalane, the 2009 USL-2 Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-League pick who was acquired by D.C. United this offseason.

"Nate has had a lot of success in college and in the PDL. We expect him to come in and be a big part of our attack," said Head Coach Bill Becher.

Isles Return Five Players

The Harrisburg City Islanders are proud to welcome back a number of returning players for the 2010 season. Along with captain Dustin Bixler, Geoff Bloes, Jason Pelletier, Anthony Calvano, David Schofield have confirmed they will be returning to the Island.

Dustin Bixler will return to bolster the City Islanders defense. Bixler played for Red Land High School before an outstanding career at Lock Haven University. Bixler's performance with the Islanders last season earned USL-2 First Team honors. Joining Dustin on defense will be returnees Anthony Calvano (Penn State) and local product of Middletown High School, Geoff Bloes (Shippensburg University). Bloes, a hardworking defender, started nearly every game for Islanders, and helped the team achieve a 1.15 goals against average, 3rd best in the league. Calvano was slowed by an injury during the first half of the season, but returned and won a starting spot in the lineup before the playoffs began. Jason Pelletier, another Middletown High School graduate returns to the center midfield for the Islanders. Pelletier is excellent at distributing the ball, and a key player in the Islanders midfield. David Schofield returns for his 7th season with the Islanders. Schofield has been with the Islanders since the inaugural season in 2004. Schofield holds the All-time record for assists with 22.

Looking to build off a 12-9-4 overall record in 2009, the City Islanders will return a few more players and continue to seek new talent at the USL Men's Player Showcase in Charleston, SC this weekend. Preseason camp will open on March 15th and several players have already received an invitation from the coaching staff.

Fisher Announces Retirement

Midfielder/forward Steve Fisher, an original City Islander and native of Hershey, has announced his retirement. "From the start, Steve's been great for this franchise on and off the field," said City Islanders General Manager Kierstin Rowe. "He'll always be a City Islander icon, a local product who became a classy professional and worked extremely hard for this team. We hope he has as much success in the next chapter of his life."

In six seasons, Fisher has left an indelible mark on the club record books. Last year, he became the first City Islander to hit the century mark in games played and retires as the team's all-time leader in that category (103). The 28-year-old ranks second in Harrisburg history in assists (17) and points (49), is tied for second with 16 goals, and is fourth in minutes played (5,587).

The Lehigh graduate accounted for three of the most momentous goals in team history: he scored the club's first-ever goal on May 8, 2004; put Harrisburg into the USL-2 Championship Game (which they won) with an overtime game-winner in the Semifinal on August 18, 2007, against Cleveland; and recorded the lone goal in Harrisburg's first win against a Major League Soccer opponent, a 1-0 U.S. Open Cup triumph over D.C. United on June 11, 2007.

2010 Schedule Released

With the kick-off of the New Year, the Harrisburg City Islanders are excited to announce their 2010 schedule.

Looking to build off a 12-9-4 overall record in 2009, the Islanders' front office has been busy preparing for another action packed season. The United Soccer Leagues Second Division (USL-2) has once again been sanctioned from the United States Soccer Federation, the governing body of soccer in the United States. As a result, the Islanders, and the entire USL-2 will be incorporated into US Soccer's third division and eligible for the US Open Cup. With the level of professional soccer continuing to grow in the United States, you can expect another exciting season.

In the off season, players have been keeping fit and coaches Bill Becher and Steve Widdowson have been busy scouting new talent.

With so much off-season preparation, the Harrisburg City Islander's are eager to open their seventh season on Saturday, April 17 on the road against defending champions the Richmond Kickers. A week later, on April 24, they host Real Maryland in their home opener at Harrisburg's Skyline Sports Complex on City Island.

The Harrisburg City Islander's regular season will consist of 20 games: ten home and ten away. The Islanders will play each team twice at home and twice on the road. Returning with the Islanders to the USL-2 are the Charlotte Eagles, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Real Maryland Monarchs and the Richmond Kickers. The Charleston Battery will also join the USL-2 after competing in the USL-1 for several seasons. The Bermuda Hogges and the Western Mass Pioneers will both move down to the PDL and Crystal Palace Baltimore will play in the USL Conference of a new league.

All regular season home games this season will be held on Saturdays at 7pm at the Skyline Sports Complex. Gates will open at 5:30. Each game will be sure to feature the summer fun you've come to expect from the Islanders: food from your favorite area vendors, the City Islanders' merchandise stand, Tiki's Kids' Cove, and a post-game autographs with your Harrisburg City Islanders.

This season will also feature the Second Annual Beach Bash and 3v3 Surf 'n Turf Tournament. In addition, the Islanders are reserving space now for group nights.
